There are a few symbols that you can darken or leave clear just so you can mark that it's your brand or something. The other mark to the left if to signify it's in generation 6. And the face like the electrical outlet means it had Pokérus.

I just mark my favourite Pokemon with them because I couldn't care less about IVs. To me, Pokemon aren't just computer programs that I need to make a bunch of to get the "perfect" ones, they're friends.

Sadly I got sucked into shiny hunting and competitive battling and most of my in-game Mons get traded for Legendaries which get traded for shinies. I lost my childhood wonder. But a lot of my old favorites are making it onto my teams, like the Eviolite Bronzor I'm training now.
