You can craft Gold and Platinum into the finest blades and armor sets, but not into coins. Even so, the refined bars, which are much denser, sell for so much less.
Yet somehow, NPCs and the monsters like Angry Trappers, Lava Slimes, Aliens, Granite monsters and even Cthulhu's Eye have these unrefinable coins and have been holding onto them for whatever reason. Though admittedly, I can think of counter-theories for those.
This has probably also been mentioned already, sorry.

I guess iron skin isn't enough.
A lot of the potions seem pretty weird and impossible, even in a fantasy world. The anti gravity potion literally allows you to reverse gravity at will, the crate potion somehow attracts crates while you're fishing, and the gender change potion (which should need no explanation).

what about the fact that they make dirt into metiorite?
Well, they are supposed to leave a crater, but they simply do that because rearranging the displaced dirt blocks would have been difficult at the point they were added.

If the items that you place in the safe appear in every safe, then why not use the safe as a teleporter?
