People always say that there needs to be more summoning items, but within that group, there's an even smaller group that needs even more attention: Sentry summons. There are plenty of suggestions and ideas for regular minions, but not for sentries. This thread is a compilation of my ideas, and my favorites of those that others have had.

Just in case you don't know, let me explain this to you. Sentry summoning items are like other summoning items, but they don't add to the usual minion count. Instead, they have a fixed 1 minute duration. Only one sentry can be active at once, and summoning a new one takes the old one's place.

Here's what I've compiled so far.


New Summoner and Utility Drops for Pre-HM Bosses

Handy Staff
Summons two Skeletron Hands that protect/fight for the player.
Limited to the length of the arms. (~6 block reach)​
12 Summon damage.
Dropped by:
* Skeletron - 14.29% (1/14) chance.


Pirate Summoning Staves
~Me (SzGamer227)

Cannonier Staff
Summons a Pirate sentry with a Captain's Machinegun for 1 minute.
Rapidly fires bullets (6 shots every second).
Pauses for 2 seconds to fire a Cannon shot every 5 seconds.
Cannon shots do 3x AoE damage.​
15 Damage.
Recipe:
* Pirate Voodoo Staff
* Sailor's Skull
* Pirate Gun Metal

Antlion Staff
Summons a stationary Antlion that attacks enemies.
Shoots sand every 2 seconds or so.​
17 Summon damage.

Clinger Staff
Summons a rooted Clinger to attack enemies.

Lunges at enemies and deals contact damage.​

Summons a spinning Spiked Ball on a chain anchored to a targeted block.
15 Summon damage.

Mining the anchor block of a Spiked Ball - 3.3% (1/30)


Missile Wrench
Summons a missile battery that fires a burst of homing missiles equal in number to the current minion cap. Missiles explode on contact.
22 Summon damage.

Nectar Staff
Summons a flower that fires homing healing bolts at the user (or others on their team).
Recipe:
Jungle Rose
Life Fruits (5)

Handy Staff PRIME (or just Prime Staff)
Summons four Prime Appendages to fight/protect the player.
Limited to the length of the arms. (~7 block reach)
Prime Vice and Saw lunge at enemies and deal contact damage.
Prime Laser fires lasers once every second or so.
Prime Cannon fires a cannonball every 2 seconds or so.
Deals AoE damage.​
Also, if suggestion of mine for Skeletron Prime improvements gets added:
Vice/Saw will sometimes be replaced by a Mace/Blade.
Functionally identical to their counterparts.​
Laser will sometimes be replaced by a Machine Gun.
Attacks faster, but deals less damage.​
Cannon will sometimes be replaced with an Enforcer.
Fires a spread of bullets instead of cannon balls.​
30 Summon damage.

Staff of the Frost Hydra (Buff)
Summons a Frost Hydra.
Hydra's attack should be able to hit multiple enemies.​
110 Summon damage. (10% more than it is currently.)
This buff is proposed over concerns that the Frost Hydra isn't enough of an upgrade over the Queen Spider Staff.


Golem Staff
Summons a levitating Golem Head that shoots at enemies.
Hovers around its home location.
Shoots lasers from each of its eyes 1.5 times every second.
Each laser penetrates enemies twice.​
Fires a bouncing fireball every 6 seconds.
Bounces or penetrates enemies 4 times.​
45 Summon damage.
Dropped by:
Golem - 1/8 (12.5%)


Mournful Staff
Summons a miniature Mourning Wood that shoots Flaming Spikes and Greek Fire at enemies.
Flaming Spikes can penetrate one enemy each.
Greek Fire lingers causing damage over time.​
33 Summon damage.

What do you mean with "Lihzahrd Brick Walls would be invulnerable until after Golem is defeated" ?
Aren't they already that; and even if they weren't, what does it matter? :red:

If you can smash Lihzarhd Walls, you can bootleg Lihzahrd Bricks and obtain the Staff before Golem is defeated.

I may end up using some of Zoomo's materials for simplicity's sake.

Oh yeah, you can craft Lzaihizhziahzhizihzrd brick walls now.
 
idea:
Iron/lead wrench: crafted with 1 red or 1 blue wrench+ wire+iron or lead, when used spawns a mini sentry that shoots meteor shots with low damage, high knockback, and high attack speed.
and an upgrade crafted with obsidian and hellstone, or found in shadow chests, spawns a level 1 sentry
golden wrench: dropped from pirate cannoneer [a summoner-type enemy, creates a very large, sluggish cannon, often dealing~ 120 damage to adamantite players] spawns a level 2 sentry, which has superior stats to the level 1 sentry

Cyber Wrench: sold by the cyborg, spawns a level 3 sentry, similar stats to the level 2 sentry but fires very powerful rockets.

The idea is cool, but having just one would probably be best. Pre-Hardmode or post-Plantera, because the Cannonier Staff takes the Hardmode slot.

(The reference isn't worth it.)
 
Here's an idea:

Prehistorian Staff

Summons a large tyrannosaur that attacks enemies
Charges enemies and bites them, dealing contact damage
Occasionally inflicts the Bleeding debuff
Not sure what the damage could be

Not sure what the recipe could be, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to Terraria :p Maybe it could include Amber and some sort of Jungle item?
 
Present staff (or, mischief staff):
Summons a wrapped present.
When an enemy approaches the present, the lid flies open and a boxing glove emerges from it and proceeds to punch the nearest enemy.
Obtainable from the frost moon.
Very Insane knockback.
150 base damage.

Another hive armor weapon.
Damage idk (It's would be a prehardmode weapon so I don't know how it should be balanced)

Damage == 46
Shoots slowly

Sentries are cool , someone should create a mod that adds some more minion/turret staves.
 
plantera staff:
drops from plantera will go on a block or cling to 3 different areas within 10 tiles from where you clicked to be a turret. shoots pink seeds (like phase 1 plantera) and occasionally a pink spiky ball

When I get into modding a sentry mod is my first priority. IF I get into modding.
 
Starved Staff: A staff that summons a slightly bigger hungry to fight you, drops from wall of flesh. (Always wanted a summon drop from him.)

I don't think that belongs as a Summoner weapon, but that would be freaking amazing as a 1-use trap that drops from Present Mimics.

I think that would be more fitting as a regular Minion weapon, because WoF has lots of Hungry.

Well, thanks to those Pygmies, I don't have a choice. The Jungle summoning weapon will need to be a sentry.

By the way, do you ever get the feeling that the Staff of the Frost Hydra doesn't really pull its weight?

I haven't compared it explicitly with the Queen Spider Staff, but as long as it's stronger, it doesn't have to.

Maybe a small damage buff, penetrating projectiles, and Frostburn would remedy that feeling.
