Greetings and Salutations, and welcome to my humble artsy abode! This is the place where I host non-Tobbvald's Tinkering material! Be it actual artworks or sprites I just feel like doing. This thread will be dedicated to my sprites and art, both of which I've accumulated quite a lot now! Because believe it or not, but I really don't tend to sprite or draw just "for the luls"; I really only do it when I see a clear purpose in doing so. -But sometimes it just so happens that I feel like doing something just for fun as well! [IMG]

This place will of course fill up more over time, even more so if I decide to accept ideas from you guys, but right now I feel that I need to put more effort into polishing TT, and working on my various projects.

Without further ado, I once again welcome you to my art-thread!

A sprite for Moonhail (Måneskur in swe), the sword of my Oc -Tobbvald!

Here, have a Tobbvald as well!

Have a montage-version of Necronomitron, demi-god of the living dead!

Here I will also re-post all my entries for the Weekly Spriting Challenge, which I seek to participate in as often as possible:

    [IMG] , [IMG]

-And that's currently all for this section.

[IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

A Terra Blade I drew some time ago

A picture of Tobbvald, a really old one as well.

    "Through The Fog"

    Codename Mechra

The Dawnbreaker, a character from a worldbuilding project of mine.

Tobbvald, the rival of the above character.

The universe of said worldbuilding project

    Lord of the Plague, Tav

Stalwart Setsuko, a character from Starbound

And for those of you not familiar with the phrase "Tobbvald's Tinkering", it's the main project that keeps me active here on TCF, the place my real spriting-efforts go into. If you haven't seen it already I highly recommend taking a look at the banner in my signature.

I was wondering when you'd put up a sprite thread to show case all your brilliance :)

    Thanks :p

Well the thing is that I'll most likely not bother trying to add all the TT-sprites to this thread, that'd easily break the barrier, as well as clutter up the thread too much. I'll most likely add more shameless self-promotion other than just the siggy to make a hint of its existence though.

The problem as mentioned in OP is that I really don't tend to make either digital art or Sprites without a very good reason, since I have the world's biggest artist's and writer's block, no joke.

    I like 'em!

I would recommend using darker outlines, though. The outlines you provided make it seem flat and clustered.

Really? I think that adding too dark outlines, at least when spriting Terrara-sprites makes them seem too edged and less alive, at least using darker outlines in the shadow and lighter ones in the lighter areas is what I generally aim for. Can you tell me which sprites in particular this bothered you?

Edit: Another reason why I tend to avoid too dark outlines is that you can only go so far down in the darkness, then it all melts together and becomes too blurry. Using lighter outlines prevents you from ever bumping into that barrier.

Edit2: It also doesn't help that the background on TCF is dark, that automatically makes all shadows look too light and at the same time blurred regardless, try opening up any sprite in a new tab with white background and you'll see what I mean.

Oh! I totolly forgot about the dark background.

Good reason, nonetheless. I use more, higher-contrast palletes, so I usually outline my sprites with black.

I edited one of your sprites real quick to show difference with a dark outline rather than a lower shade.

imo, it pops out a bit more if you use a darker outline.

Funny that you brought that sprite in up in particular, since its entire palette is borrowed from the sea snail, a mob which funnily enough is in the game. I don't really want to take responsibility for it since I had little choice in the matter. I didn't really like how the colors turned out either.

But yeah I see what you mean; a more common way of spriting is to use next to black borders which of course is a just as valid style as the one I'm using. But I prefer highlighting the direction that the light travels with brighter borders to keep a shorter distance between the border's color and the palette of the main composition mainly because it makes the sprite feel more vibrant and less flat/out of place. I guess it's just a matter of personal preference though, but since I've seen Re-Logic's sprites become increasingly lenient with this way of spriting I try to adapt that change as well, at least in my Terraria-oriented sprites which means to say almost all.

You could try selout-ing (selective outlining.)

Yeah, not the best example, but it should describe it.
You basically shade the outline. It looks good on some pieces, it doesn't on others.

As for palette, yeah, sometimes you work with with a given palette, but you should spice it up sometimes.

I solemnly find myself unsatisfied with Terraria's palette (Re-Logic's spriters still do a very nice job, though.), as such I get a base color and create my own palette.

As for the next to black borders, I don't use that. I use black borders. Because, as I said, I use more higher-contrasting palette, as such I find the darkest shade of a color surpassing the darkness of the outline, which becomes problematic because it looks bad.

If you ask me, the lighter outline makes it pop more.. makes it look like it's part of the actual sprite and less of a stroke effect. Too dark of an outline makes it look flat, to me.

Btw, amazing sprites and drawings! I used to think I was pretty good at spriting but you and others keep making me feel like an amateur!
