Invite only is when NOBODY can join your server until you send them an invitation. Regardless of how many people do you have on your friend lists.

Nobody was hacking, the way Friends Only works is that friends of friends of friends of friends, etc. can all join. So just set it to Invite only and you'll be fine.
ima set it to invite only but ive never seen that dude before so i doubt that is correct its probably juust really easy to bypass.

Nope, its definitely correct, that's how Friends Only was coded. If you or your wife had a friend, that friend might have a friend, who has a friend, who's friends with the guy/guys who griefed you.
well then ._. that sucks... yea invite only then or password protected :\ ether way.

As tedious as it feels, it's best to always have private sessions with friends on an Invite-only, passworded protected server. Less hassle, no one can get in unless it's an invitation directly given by you.

That's screwed up, but it must've been some guy in your friends list who decided to prank you. You might not've recognized him/her because they could've changed their name, or had a different character name than their Steam name.

I just honestly think this was taken too far.
Telling someone "you disgust me." is extremely disrespectful and entirely inappropriate for TCF. Always be respectful and mature when interacting with others on TCF, similar actions in the future will be addressed with warning points which will lead to account restrictions if you persist.
You came into the thread after it had already been resolved and everyone was calm. If you believe someone is being out of line, please inform staff and take no further action.

Honestly, that should be how it currently works. 'Friends only' makes it so that only friends from your steam friends list can join your game.
The only time friend of friends can join is if an existing friend is in your server. In that case, it's possible for their friends to join them via Join Game.
Assuming it's merely you and your wife who plays on your server, then only you and your wife's friends would be able to join, not friend of friends.
If I'm correct, then whoever joined and griefed your server would be someone who either randomly inputs IPs to grief [and somehow happened to come across yours, or is someone who already knows/manages to kknow your IP.
In which case, there are a few options:
Make a password. It can be as simple as 'banana'. There shouldn't be an excuse to not having a password, as it's as simple as inputting it the moment you host & play, or when you first start up a dedicated server. This is the easiest and the most recommended option ever. No drawbacks. Nope. None. Nil. Zippo.
Change your port. It makes it a lot more difficult to randomly acquire random servers if you're not in the default 7777 port. Drawback? Well, I'm not sure you can do this with Host & Play. You can do it easy with dedicated servers, however.
Stay in LAN. If you and your wife play locally, there's no need to play online. The drawback is that you don't get to use host & play for this one.

You should be ashamed of yourself.
What you could have done is simply quit playing once strange people joined your game so they'd be tossed out. No damage done to your world and afterwards you could have calmly looked for answers on this forum.

If it's just your wife and you, why not use the Dedi software, and use a LAN system to connect? *Ah, the old days of lugging my PC to my friends' house to play Total Annihilation and DIablo II*
LAN is a fantastic solution if it's just you and her in the same house on that world. *FAILING* being in the same house, you can use the Evolve Peer2Peer system to simulate a LAN party with specifically people you invite personally. and yes, I'm 100% certai Terraria works with Evolve. Even 10K seller "planet Explorers" works with Evolve, I'm *CERTAIN* 12 mil+ Terraria works with it (It's how my friend and I play)
