Do you need PS4 plus to play online on playstation

Hi, my friend was considering getting terraria for his ps4, but he does not have PS plus and I was wondering if I could still play with him or if he would need it. Thanks for any help!

I always had PS Plus so I'm not sure, I heard you only need to be friends to join each other though.

Yes, PS Plus is required to play any game online with PS4 (but not PS3/Vita).

It's the same as Xbox Live Gold for XB1.
