Ranged almost always means ranged damage. We have Toxikarp but the others really don't make sense as answers to this question.
Re: original suggestion, I'd not be adverse to having a Pistol Shrimp fished out from the ocean, as long as it doesn't do the same progression break Reaver Shark does and allow you to get a gun early. (Yes, I know red ryder exists, but that's for one part of the calendar. Even the travelling merchant obeys the post-Shadow Orb rule.)
