It appears to be a desert, or just a bunch of sand. You can see many settlements in the sand. Though, a few are on more solid ground.

You find what seems to be a farm. There are crops growing outside. You can see a well, and a pump. Even potting some edible plants for consumption. There is a little path that goes up to a shack. Outside of the shack, you can walk up a trail, onto the top of some hills overlooking some of the facilities in the Great Erratic. If you turn right, you can pass by a flag pole, and at the base of the flagpole is a grave. Beyond that is a lookout tower, perhaps to keep an eye on the crazy experiments of the Great Erratic from attacking unnoticed.
