CursedSilver, your animated avatar demonstrates how the optic nerve and brain fill in missing information using "guesswork" based on incoming stimuli.

Many people believe their perception is the same thing as the sensory input that our visual apparatus converts into that perception. Much of the time considerable alteration is performed by the optic nerve, which pre-processes raw incoming stimuli, and the brain, which does higher-level analysis and interpretation on what the optic nerve passes along.

When looking more or less at the icon it's clear that the colorful light bursts are moving directly across the image's center. But if your eyes are directed a few inches away (farther for the large version shown above), the impression is that they're moving in a square around the image, with each light burst starting where the previous one ended (a reasonable guess, though wrong).

Also, Merry Christmas, Joyous Yule, and an early Good Boxing Day / Blessed Zartosht No-Diso to all.
