Game Mechanics The ability to switch to older versions

Basically, the players could go back to versions such as 1.2, 1.1 and even prehardmode updates like 1.0.5, like in Minecraft. It would have all the functions of the original - maybe some bug fixes for the most crippling glitches - and would mainly exist to preserve nostalgia.

I don't know if this already has been posted, so.. sorry if it was.

Besides nostalgia, I don't really see a purpose, but alright i guess. I'm not sure if the devs have even saved the earlier versions of terraria.

TerrariaHelp in youtube has managed it somehow.

Well, there were some tConfig/tAPI mods back then.

But since TO went down, I doubt there are any of them left.

but if you have items from a newer version and you get to a version where that item doesn't exist , same goes for some bosses (and npcs)
it requires a lot of coding and respriting into the theme of that version , it's like making the same game over 20 times , but with removed features and hotfixes each

You got a point there.

It's true that I may have underestimated the difficulty of this addition. :p

BUUUUUT they could add a dlc (free or not but cheap) OOORRRRRR a beta code, ORRRR a terraria launcher, like the dude that did this on 2014 but it isnt working anymore

AAAND i think u did copy my post i did , i dont know, 2 weeks ago maybe?
because i made that same suggestion a time ago.
If im wrong pardon me.

So you did.

Sorry. Didn't see it.

nah its okay. no one even opened it.hope our ideas get to the dev:D

Actually, I tried to ask them for that awhile ago, but it sadly been denied.
Before posting THIS message, I did go search my post to show you, but seems like it's got deleted I think, I can't seems to find it.
But yeah, sorry for that, but the way they tell that this ISN'T going to happen make me think really greatly that you wouldn't have more luck for you being accepted.
:/

I think they would want to remove some content from the older versions, I.e the Zapinator. The only problem is that there would need to be some gui or program by Re-Logic to download it, and I'm pretty sure Re-Logic doesn't want us playing the older versions.

The thing isn't that they don't want us to play olders version. I even think they WANT us to play older version.
The main problem is not that, of course. The main problem is in fact, the code, the way or anything that make us ABLE to go to older versions.
That is NOT an easy code to do. And in my post, I take Minecraft for exemple, but I noticed that Minecraft used a very different way to handle the storage, so that make it easier for him to play older version. Tough, Terraria use Steam library to download, update and play the game, or version.

They could possibly use the steam beta channel though, using the properties tab, and could just set the older versions as betas.

Yeah, the is that. But after, that, the is even more problem, like the compatibility one. Difficult to explain that one. But yeah, good idea tough :)

To counter compatibility issues, make the older versions save in different folders than the current version.
Each version would have their own folder

Now, we have the "file checking" problem that come. Basicaly, the code of the game is made that he check at certain place the files that he want (Like the moon lord sprite, for exemple). Tough, when changing with "Beta / experimental version", it only make it so you have "more" stuff, it's doesn't change the code that is checking for specific files. So basicaly, a lot of trouble. It's way better to use fanmade thingy that make change version, it's WAYYYYYYYYYYYYY easier and it's WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better.

Using a beta channel would basically be treating the old versions as updates (when they're really just downdates, if that makes any sense.) Therefore it would just replace the current version's assets.
