Testing A FEW weapons against the Eater of Worlds

These were just some baseline tests against the Eater of Worlds using different weapons. The results were actually very different than I expected; I thought guns would do much better, for instance.

Arena was underground rectangle with three rows of platforms.

Buffs used: Bast statue, sharpening station, ammo box, archery potion, magic power potion, magic regeneration potion, endurance potion, thorns potion, stoneskin, summoning potion, regeneration potion, sake (melee only), exquisitely stuffed, wrath potion

Accessories used: All accessories were menacing. Everyone used frostspark boots, shield of cthulhu, yellow horseshoe balloon, and sharktooth necklace; summoner and melee used feral claws, magic used mana flower, and ranger I just threw on a band of regeneration.

Minions used: two flinxes

I considered using weapons from Queen Bee, Skeletron, and Deerclops, but they generally make the fight trivial. I did include some weapons that are obtained only after gathering enough shadow scales; that's because many players on higher difficulties will attempt this boss a few times until they get enough shadow scales for a nightmare pickaxe, then mine hellstone. I've done it on legendary, so I included those for comparison.

Melee:
Armor used: Gladiator.

Melee did far better than the others. This is likely due to the piercing nature of swords, but also because I used gladiator armor and just stood still in the middle of the boss, letting the Thorns potion do damage (using Thorns only is included in this list).
  1. Volcano, 23 seconds
  2. Blade O' Grass: 27 seconds
  3. Exotic Scimitar 27 seconds (this was a surprise!)
  4. Mandible blade 29 seconds (ditto)
  5. Swordfish 30 seconds
  6. Ball O' Hurt 33 seconds (this is throwing. dropping it was 49 seconds, spinning was 52).
  7. Falcon blade: 33 seconds
  8. Bladed glove 34 seconds
  9. Katana: 34 seconds
  10. Starfury: 38 seconds (it was recently reworked to pass through ceilings a bit better)
  11. Flaming mace: 38 seconds
  12. Enchanted Sword: 40 seconds (blade and beam)
  13. Reaver shark: 40 seconds
  14. Light's Bane: 44 seconds
  15. Sawtooth shark: 46 seconds
  16. Cascade: 48 seconds
  17. Storm spear: 50 seconds
  18. Rockfish: 51 seconds
  19. Bone sword: 51 seconds
  20. Trident: 52 seconds
  21. Thorn Chakram: 54 seconds
  22. Trimarang: 59 seconds
  23. Candy Cane Sword: 59 seconds
  24. Gladius: 62 seconds
  25. Ice blade: 64 seconds
  26. Malaise: 83 seconds, and one of the few times I died
  27. Nothing but thorns and minions: 140 seconds
Ranger
Armor used: fossil armor
Ammo: Silver bullets, jester arrows, unholy arrows

Ranger did much worse than I expected, outside of the standard 'bow+Jester arrows'

  2. Molten fury, unholy arrows: 35 seconds
  3. Demon bow, jester arrows: 38 seconds
  4. Bone throwing knives: 42 seconds
  5. Demon bow, unholy arrows: 44 seconds
  6. Spiky ball: 47 seconds
  7. Molotov cocktail: 52 seconds (much worse than I thought)
  8. Harpoon, close distance: 56 seconds
  9. Minishark: 67 seconds
  10. Flare gun: 68 seconds
  11. Boomstidck: 70 seconds
  12. Javelin: 71 seconds
  13. Frost daggerfish: 73 seconds
  14. Blood rain bow: 75 seconds
  15. Blowgun, poison darts: 82 seconds
  16. Revolver: 83 seconds
  17. Sandgun: 83 seconds (messy, horrible, blocked by platforms)
  18. Snowball cannon: 84 seconds
  19. Grenades 88 seconds (pretty disappointing)
  20. Paintball gun: 90 seconds
  21. Undertaker (forgot it's crimson only): 95 seconds
  22. Musket: 96 seconds (really shocked by this)
  23. Flintlock pistol: 105 seconds
  24. Bone Javelin (114 seconds)
Magic:
Armors used: Wizard set, Jungle Armor

The jungle armor was clearly superior to the wizard set, which surprised me. I think I didn't realize that wizard set got nerfed a while back.

  1. Demon scythe, jungle armor: 24 seconds
  2. Gray zapinator, jungle armor: 31 seconds
  3. Vilethorn, jungle armor: 34 seconds (don't forget, includes sharktooth necklace)
  4. Demon scythe, magic set: 37 seconds
  5. Vilethorn, wizard set: 50 seconds
  6. Gray zapinator, wizard set: 54 seconds
  7. Diamond staff, wizard set and jungle armor: 55 seconds (tied, don't know why)
  8. Crimson rod (I know, it's crimson only), jungle armor: 57 seconds
  9. Wand of sparking, jungle set: 60 seconds
  10. Thunder zapper, jungle armor: 81 seconds
  11. Crimson rod (I know, it's crimson only), wizard set: 88 seconds
  12. Wand of sparking, wizard set: 93 seconds
  13. Thunder zapper, wizard set: 103 seconds
  14. Amethyst staff, wizard set (didn't try jungle): 172 seconds
Summoner:
Armor used: Flinx fur coat, platinum helmet and greaves

The major surprise here was the Finch staff. Someone on the wiki said it was good vs this boss, and they were right!
  1. Vampire Frog Staff, snapthorn: 28 seconds
  2. Vampire frog staff, leather whip: 35 seconds
  3. Finch Staff, snapthorn: 35 seconds
  4. Imp staff, snapthorn: 39 seconds
  5. Imp staff, leather: 41 seconds
  6. Flinx staff, snapthorn: 48 seconds
  7. Finch staff, leather: 50 seconds
  8. Slime staff, snapthorn: 53 seconds
  9. Flinx staff, leather: 73 seconds
  10. Slime staff, leather: 102 seconds

Just tried some Don't Starve weapons:

Tentacle spike: 40 seconds
Lucy the Axe: 30 seconds
Weather pain, alone: 87 seconds
Pewmatic horn: 70 seconds

Let's take a look at the base stats for a moment

Okay, so Exotic Scimitar is a bit stronger than Blade of Grass... Without the projectile and Without the Poisoned. Swords can only hit 3 enemies per swing, and the Blade of Grass' leaves pierce once and are shot every swing, so:

Blade of Grass has effectively 63 base damage, so 189 DPS
Exotic Scimitar has 60 base damage, so 200 DPS.

After poisoning just 2 segments Blade of Grass has more DPS, interesting how that doesn't seem to matter here.

There is no logical explanation for this at all, did you mix the kill times up?

Yes, I made a mistake, the leather whip was 35 seconds, which I've now fixed.

I think swing speed definitely factors in for the melee weapons; Lucy the axe was just eating up the worm before it could reach the player, but the worm 'stalled' a lot, while the Demon scythe killed it so fast the worm never slowed down. Volcano's slow speed didn't matter because the explosions killed so many at once.
