Terraria State of the Game - September 2024

Late February 2025

Greetings Terrarians!

Fall is almost here, and we can't wait. For several members of the team, this is their favorite time of the year - Halloween decorations are already starting to go up! Speaking of, we hope everyone is already coming up with ideas for cool Terraria pumpkin carvings, costumes, and art because we always love to see them. In the meantime, the teams remain hard at work on adding/tweaking/fixing content for Terraria 1.4.5. The finish line is starting to take shape, though we admittedly do have a couple of decent-sized ideas we want to discuss internally and decide if we should take those on before we can say for certain. How's that for vague? All that said, we are pretty excited for what is in Terraria 1.4.5 already, what we know is still to be added, and what may or may not be yet to come. Just a little while longer...

All that said, let's see what's going on in the world of Terraria...

TERRARIA - WHITTLING DOWN THE FINAL LISTS

As we mentioned in the opening of the State of the Game, the team has the final list in-hand - as well as a few possible additional things that we might include, which we will decide in the next couple of weeks - and is hard at work with getting all of that content together. Terraria 1.4.5 has turned into quite an update, far exceeding our initial intent to "just do the Dead Cells content". We know the update process has been longer than usual (or anyone expected), but the end is in sight and we hope that it will not be too much longer before we can get and give a sense for timing.

We had a few spoilers in mind for this month, but none of them really felt right and/or are things we may not want to spoil at all before the update drops. So, that being the case, no spoilers from the PC side this month, I'm afraid. Of course, it is always a good time to look back on the tons of spoilers given for this update thus far - even we were floored by what all has been shared so far!

Oh, and if you haven't checked out Core Keeper yet, you should - the team at Pugstorm are good people and they have created a pretty fun game!

Hello everyone!

The tModLoader team and our amazing community of contributors continues to improve tModLoader. On October 1st the monthly update release of tModLoader will go live. Once again this month's release contains many improvements to the user experience, some gameplay bug fixes, as well as new features with examples and documentation for mod makers.

One major contribution we'd like to highlight this month is work by alueck that enables Max and Linux users to contribute directly to tModLoader. If you are a Mac or Linux user and have been wanting to contribute a new feature to tModLoader, it should now be possible and we are willing to help on Discord if you run into any roadblocks.

Modders and users should also keep an eye out for our monthly Steam announcement on the 1st where a complete listing of bug fixes and API changes for this month's release will be shown. The in-game news button on the main menu will send you directly to the announcement once it is live.

We look forward to seeing how mods make use of these new features. As always, if you are having issues of any sort, definitely don't hesitate to check out our FAQ on github or reach out to us at our Discord.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR TML?

More features, continuing to evolve and grow what TML can do... and getting ready for 1.4.5.

As always, you can keep track of the current progress and much more in real time at tModLoader/tModLoader (But note that the completion percentage doesn't mean anything, because issues and PRs don't have weights.)

Developers who are willing to contribute may do so by doing PRs to the tModLoader/tModLoader branch. (See tModLoader/tModLoader)

CONSOLE & MOBILE - DR STUDIOS
View attachment 482723

Alongside keeping pace with the Re-Logic PC team in regards to adding all of the content and changes coming with Terraria 1.4.5, the DR Studios team has spent a considerable amount of time thinking of ways to evolve and improve the experience on console and mobile. One such area of focus has been around the issue of the screen feeling cluttered - especially on devices with smaller screens - due to the number of control buttons that are needed to enable a fully-operational control scheme for Terraria. We have brainstormed a lot of ways to tackle this issue, and we feel like we have landed on a pretty good new option for players - Radial Buttons!

2HGVKRS.gif

These new radial buttons that let you combine up to 4 different actions into one button. Our main goal with them is to help cut down on clutter, as well as to better associate related actions in defaults (for example, combining potions + cursor options together in their own radial buttons). These support quick swipe gestures if you want to instantly use something, and are fully customizable by the player.

These will eventually be accompanied by a new default scheme, but there is a lot of discussion and iteration that needs to happen before we can show that to you.

We hope this will give players that find the screen to be a bit crowded on mobile a new way to play!

---

Until next time, Console & Mobile friends - thanks for all of your love and support!

The team is feeling pretty good about console & mobile at this point, but we know that the bug reporting never stops! So, please, as you run into any issues, be sure to file a Bug Report via the links below!

TERRARIA MERCHANDISE UPDATES

TERRARIA - THE BOARD GAME UPDATE

View attachment 482517
Hello Terrarians! Chris here, lead developer at Paper Fort Games. The last month has flown by at Paper Fort Games HQ thanks to ongoing game development, playtesting, art production and convention preparation. In this month’s designer diary, I’ll be sharing development news, playmat and Developer Set art, videos of our latest Boss miniature prototypes and a look at how we’ve recently been using lasers as part of the design process.

If you missed the campaign but would like to get your hands on the game, don’t worry! Late pledges are now available by clicking the link below...

Let’s jump in!

PLAYMAT ART
In my last design diary, I shared George’s detailed black and white sketches of the Terrarian vs Wall of Flesh art piece that will be featured on the full-art side of the game’s playmat. He’s been hard at work bringing that scene to life and we’re very excited to reveal the full-colour art below!

Here’s the process from first sketch to final art:

We’ve also been updating the other side of the playmat; the one that helps you to set up the game. It features pre-printed starting biome tiles and spaces for NPCs, objectives and more. As you’ll be building your world on this side of the mat, we’ve opted to keep it relatively simple, so it doesn't detract from important gameplay information:

We can’t wait to see a physical version of this playmat; a sample is being produced right now and we're hoping to have it at our booth during Essen Spiel (more about that below), so swing by to see it if you’re there!

Want to get your hands on the playmat? You can get it as an add-on with any Terraria: The Board Game pledge!

---

BOSS MINIATURES
The latest prototypes of our boss miniatures recently arrived at the office; in the video below, you can see examples of the key system that allows boss parts to be removed/ swapped out during boss battles.

King Slime isn’t quite there yet; the transparent material looks pretty good but his key system needs further improvement. Also, the minis in this video are just spray painted; these won’t be their final colours as they will be cast in specific colour-matched plastics we have chosen for each boss.

The great thing about high-quality 3D printing is that we can try these models out, make changes and make sure they work before committing to making the final casting moulds.

---

GAME DEVELOPMENT (AND LASERS!)
Here are some of the game’s features we’ve been focusing on this month:

  • Addition of a ‘threat’ track to speed up the game, incentivise Boss engagement and pave the way for threat level-dependent behaviour/ events in future expansions.
  • Enhancements to the player board layout and shape.
  • Implementation of an enemy retaliation mechanism.
  • Addition of low-level consumables cards available to buy from the merchant NPC.
  • Simplification of NPC spawning criteria.
  • Improvement of the deluxe bestiary/ crafting menu layout for quicker, easier lookup.

Most of the changes above are mechanism-based, but some (like changes to the player board and the bestiary/ crafting menu) are physical. Previously we relied on manufacturers sending updated punchboard components, but Chris has recently been learning how to use an industrial laser cutter to make our own prototype punchboard components. No more cutting things out by hand or waiting for updated components to be shipped to us; we can now make a change, try it out and adjust as necessary within a very short timeframe. It’s a game-changer!

---

DEVELOPER SETS
George recently finished all of the Developer vanity sets for the game; here they are in all their painted glory! We’d like to say a huge thank you to the Re-Logic team for letting us include them, and for the developers’ feedback on their sets.

MEET US AT ESSEN SPIEL!
From October 3rd to 6th, we’ll be showing Terraria: The Board Game at Essen Spiel in Germany; the world’s largest tabletop game convention. If you’re coming to the show, we’d love to meet you; please stop by Hall 4, booth 4C430 to check out the latest version of the game (we’re between Hall 5 and the Galleria).

---
We're looking forward to sharing even more next month. Remember; if you missed the campaign but would still like to get your hands on the game, late pledges are now available via the link below:

Until next time!

Until next time, Terrarians - we hope you have an amazing month, and we look forward to bringing you the latest and greatest next time!

Back to Table of Contents
I consider that they've revealed all necessary spoilers and have been adjusting bugs (they've confirmed this one). And I think somewhere in November or December they will have released this one. That's my pressuming and my attitude towards these ones, not accurate and exact information (I know that it's obvious, however I gotta emphasize this one)
Kind regards

Release Date: December 2050.
Source: I made it up.
Now we can all be happy when the update actually happens decades earlier than we hoped.

As I don't really take a look into the community features (I am so sorry for not being active community wise, I just don't know where the bigger parts of the community resides), this state of the game doesn't really have anything to say other than showing off stuff about the board game and what the community is going on.

Of course, we shouldn't lose faith just for 1 state of the game that doesn't come with 1.4.5 spoilers or release dates, after all.

1727442028922.png

Things are getting chilling, we'll probably get spoilers next month. Hang in there terrarians, don't let the spiders bite.

(And remember to check out things outside of Terraria's sphere.)

Crowno's armor look so sick!

I'm still curious about this question: will there be some new decorative handheld items in the new update?

Still no release date, Im dissappointed in you guys.. Im joking guys, especially you devs, staff, admin and mods, im kidding, take your time, even if we dont get it until either the end of 2024 or even early to mid 2025, its fine, dont worry, good things come to those that wait, also another idea for you guys, is recruiting the bosses and mini bosses NPC, once youve defeated them and fulfilled a few other requiresments for them to join you.

I can't wait honestly I really hope we receive some expert mode changes to deerclops and the mech bosses
arguably that would be just as good as getting a new boss
its wild to me how long this updates been in the works at this point.... keep trucking on relogic

(Unless the SOTG is being used for misdirection to cover for a surprise release this week...)

the delusion is strong in this one.

i know terraria is a great game, but some people here act like it's a literal drug and they can't go on without a fresh dose.

i can only imagine the coping they'll go through when re-logic finally does move on and takes a few years to develop a new game.

there are countless games to keep yourselves busy with until the devs are ready to release the update, it won't hurt you to play something else until then.

i really do hope the devs take their time and are able to implement everything they want to, and don't give in to the pressure of impatient fans.

Did you just skip straight to the last line of my post and then go on to call me a delusional impatient fan who acts like the game is a drug? Firstly, I was just making a joke. I think that should be pretty clear from the context of the rest of my post. And secondly, even if I wasn't making a joke - I think your attacks are uncalled for. When you talk like that, please consider that there's another person on the other end reading it.

I can't wait to play a completely fresh game from ReLogic outside of the survival genre!

but some people here act like it's a literal drug and they can't go on without a fresh dose.
It happens with games such as Subway Surfers and Fortnite much more than with Terraria due to timed events

there are countless games to keep yourselves busy
Most of them have pay to win and microtransaction B/S that people by playing Terraria wanted to avoid

and don't give in to the pressure of impatient fans.
They will not, as the mods here will eliminate extreme spam.

i can only imagine the coping they'll go through when re-logic finally does move on and takes a few years to develop a new game.
I do not think that there will be much coping amount changes as the user experience with Re Logic is and was very good.

Most of them have pay to win and microtransaction B/S that people by playing Terraria wanted to avoid
Do you want recommendations? I know a lot of games without any in-game purchases at all, or I can recommend alternative ways to play Terraria.
And I extend that offer to anyone here, there are way better things you can do online than waiting for the new update. It will not be released any sooner by asking again every month.

Is this a "final" update?

i read your entire post... perhaps i should've thrown some emojis in to make it sound less like an attack, but like you, i couldn't exactly tell if you were joking.

also, not all the comments were directed at you specifically, everything after the first line was just me referencing other such posts i've seen on here.

some people on here are straight-up telling the devs to stop adding content and just release the update now, and atleast one other person was driving everyone on the forums crazy over their extreme addiction to the game, so my comments aren't exactly inaccurate, regarding those people.

either way, i apologize if i upset you.

Most of them have pay to win and microtransaction B/S that people by playing Terraria wanted to avoid

"most of them"? what games are you talking about?

i have, quite literally, several hundred games that have NO such thing in them.

nintendo games, indie games, there are so many amazing games out there, it takes NO effort to find a fun game with no microtransactions.

unless you're exclusively a mobile player, i suppose, but that's to be expected of the mobile market.

or if you're playing live service games... but at that point, you're swimming in a pool of sharks and complaining about getting bitten.

Can you explain me, what "live service" means? Due to many in real life and offline activities I just do not get to gaming much.

I am not exclusively mobile because I for being 20, tried many platforms: When Nintendo DS and later DSi was THE hit in Germany in 2008-2014 I used to play on it (it was in kindergarten and primary school). Then when I got older and the 3DS came, but me and my parents saw in 2014 no use in it since I was more on the PS3 which we got at December 2013.

In middle school to around 2017 when I was 7th grade, I played some mobile games additionally to Gran Turismo 5 and Minecraft on the PS3 before the microtransaction bs till I paused gaming. Till I got for my 14th birthday my own devices in 2018, I lent my father's tablet and phone to play games. After I had my own phone and tablet, I rarely played on my tablet and never on my phone due to distraction. What contributed was the change of interest.

In 2021 I rediscovered Terraria on my tablet, played also Minecraft but it got too laggy on that device so I deleted Minecraft from my tablet. The tablet was a Samsung Galaxy Tab A I then when I got 18 bought Terraria in Oct 2022 for my laptop when 1.4.4 came. My latop is equipped with 12 gb RAM, an Intel i7 1065G7 CPU and an integrated GPU, so I was surprised Terraria and even TML with 80 mods ran smoothly there.

You have to take in account on how strong your PC is. Because I am not gaming very often, a stronger PC just for gaming is not worth for me. However I know for instance IIRC Stardew Valley and Core Keeper have no microtransaction bs. I several times planned to buy Stardew Valley or maybe Core Keeper but fear that after initial purchase and 2h playtime it just going to collect dust on my Steam library shelf, due to my interest.
Do you want recommendations? I know a lot of games without any in-game purchases at all, or I can recommend alternative ways to play Terraria.
To you, [ 🥔 ]: I already play Terraria Modloader and have found mods that already have some 1.4.5 features from the spoilers: A stardust whip and boulder spam (cf my profile: Glasia🌳, Glasia🌳), and as you can see on my profile I have fun in TML. Recently I am creating a mod that recreates a suggestion of mine: Weapons & Equip - Blueprint that is used to craft the dev sets dropped from HM boss bags instead of the dev sets being dropped directly. So I have done efforts to not have the urge to spam the devs. However I am open for your recommendations.
And I extend that offer to anyone here, there are way better things you can do online than waiting for the new update. It will not be released any sooner by asking again every month.
I already try to do more offline things to do better things than waiting. I am waiting for Oct 07, 2024, when for me the 3rd semester of my uni starts. Then I am occupied with uni stuff, so less thoughts on 1.4.5 than on the uni material and exams, including spamming the devs. I am just not the type of person to sit 24/7 on the TV, phone or PC.

To the quoted ones, if you have to speak more with me, I advise using the PM system in order not to disrupt this thread more. Thank you for your attention. Edit: For now I cannot discuss further because I am going to an anime convention. Edit 2: subdivision of long paragraph into smaller ones.

A live service game is a game that gets new changes/content frequently, like Apex Legends and most other competitive games with the ingame shop changing.

Most of them have pay to win and microtransaction B/S that people by playing Terraria wanted to avoid
I didn't know BG3 has microtransactions... And I was under impression that... thing... cannot be any worse. 😅

Jokes aside, I know about 3 games with microtransactions. That's all. "Most of them" you say ? What kind of games do you play, I wonder ? 😏

Aside from practically every mobile game in existence, and let's also take out every game by EA because they aren't any different:
Roblox (and most games inside of it)
Most FPS games with a battle pass (Fortnite, COD, XDefiant, Valorant, Overwatch)
Rocket League
Just to list a few. (I'm not trying to criticize you, as the Forums should be a place for fun, not for debate club practice, but... There's more than 3)

Is this a "final" update?
Personally, I think it is; updates bring content, and hotfixes tend to fix bugs and improve game performance.
1.4.5 is most likely the final update, since it's going to bring a lot of new content, and there probably won't be another big content update.

Crossplay will have its own update after 1.4.5, but adding Crossplay isn't exactly adding content to the game, it's just significantly improving game performance by making it possible to do cross-platform multiplayer. Not to understate how amazing Crossplay is, but I would consider it more of an "Ultimate Hotfix" than a "Final update."
